The races have a fascinating history that dates back to the early 20th century. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, which operates the racetrack, was founded by a group of Hollywood celebrities, including Bing Crosby, Pat O'Brien, Gary Cooper, and Oliver Hardy. They dreamed of creating a premier racetrack in Southern California, and their vision became a reality when Del Mar Racetrack opened its doors on July 3, 1937.

The Racetrack!

The Del Mar Racetrack quickly established itself as a prestigious venue for horse racing. It gained popularity not only for its exciting races but also for its glamorous and festive atmosphere. Hollywood stars, socialites, and prominent figures from various industries were often seen at the track. Now over 86 years later, The Del Mar Racetrack continues to be a glamorous and exciting way for San Diegians to enjoy an afternoon "where the surf meets the turf!”
