Encinitas Gem: Candles on Tap

Written by Ashley Dunn

If you’re ever in the mood for a relaxing and adorable activity, Candles on Tap in Encinitas is the perfect spot. Whether you bring your girlfriends, your boyfriend, or your family — everyone will enjoy creating their own special candle at Candles on Tap!

Candles on Tap — Encinitas, CA

Candles on Tap is San Diego’s first candle bar — and it’s so cute! It quite literally illuminated far beyond my expectations.

When you first enter, you’re greeted by the kind candle baristas! We happen to always work with Gabby, who is so fun and is incredibly knowledgably in all the various scents and how they mix. She so kindly pours us both a splash of sparkling, which I think is such a perfect addition to the full experience.

Now that we both have something to sip on, we walk through the next steps. I first pick out my favorite jar — which they have all different colors and designs. Their new ones have stones that embody different moods/feelings. I chose the jar with the “Happiness” stone.

Then what’s great about Candles on Tap is that they quite literally provide you with a step-by-step worksheet — so once you have your candle jar, you walk through the store to pick out your potential scents.

The thing about looking for scents — there’s no need to pick things that intermingle well. They have over 90+ scents to choose from, so take your time and enjoy. All you need to do is sniff around, quite literally, to see what scents smell good. The magic happens when you go back to the bar, where one of the lovely candle baristas will help you figure out what works well together!

Everything just smells so good at Candles on Tap!

Once you have written down all your favorite scents, it’s time to work on creating your perfect candle. This is where the candle baristas come in, Gabby helped me mix the various smells all together, to see what worked the best.

Once you have your perfect scent combination, it’s time to make a candle. Chris decided to make his a little bit more “woodsy” — mixing up Banana Bread, Amber Musk, Mahogany, and Peppercorn.

It’s time to make the candle! Your job is to start mixing — almost like a cocktail. Add a splash of this, a splash of that. Just continue to smell and figure out what the perfect balance is.

This is where you sit and relax, as the candle baristas do their thing. All you need to do is pour your scents into the candle jar, and they’ll fill the candle up with the soy free wax.

Relax for a bit — walk around Encinitas’s if you’d like, which is the perfect location for cute shops and good eats. Then in about an hour, your candle is ready to go and it’s time for that Instagram worthy pic!!
